It’s JUNE!! Yay! I love June. The sun starts to come out and the weather is dry at least some of the time. Around here, we finally start to feel dry for the first time in months. It’s wonderful.
If you’re new here, I love to set short term monthly goals that fit with my values and hopes for the New Year’s Resolutions that I set. I think that short-term checkpoints create a greater chance for success because it keeps our goals fresh in our mind and they’re more manageable than our wild and crazy ideas from January 1st.
Let’s review my May Goals:
I intentionally set May’s goals to be VERY manageable because I was traveling a ton. I went out of the country in the middle of the month for almost a week for work, and then we had 4 days at our our annual camping trip in May with our friends. I accurately predicted that during these times I either wouldn’t have access to my normal routine/blogging or wouldn’t have time. They were amazing trips but June is back to the grind!
Read 1 Book and Listen to 1 Audiobook – 1/2 PASS 1/2 FAIL
Physical Book: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. I am about 120 pages into this. I still had to finish The Joy Luck Club, which I completed at breakfast on my last morning in Canada. I kept trying to read All the Light We Cannot See while camping, but people kept interrupting me for fun. You can’t really argue with fun when you’re with 19 of your friends! This book will carry over into June.
Audiobook:Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari. This book was AMAZING! It was as hilarious as you’d expect from Aziz, but also scientifically researched and supported. You can look forward to a book review in the near future, but if you’re in the market for an audiobook now, I can fully recommend it.
Participate In One Instagram Giveaway and One Blog Giveaway – FAIL
This is another monthly goal. I hosted a Blog Giveaway with a reader survey, but nothing instagram focused, and that was really meant to be a present to consistent readers so I did not actually promote it outside of my normal streams of social media. It wasn’t fully in line with the spirit behind this goal so I am not counting it as a pass.
Host a periscope – FAIL
Oh my gosh… OK. So I didn’t do this. I really thought about it! I wanted to! But I would either forget, chicken out, or only feel brave after working out and I didn’t want to get onto periscope all sweaty and gross! #AllTheExcuses.
Work Out Three Times a Week FAIL
Yes, seriously. But only because of one week. If I averaged them out, I could fudge the numbers. But this goal isn’t about fudging. One week I only worked out twice. *eyeroll* I just had so much going on, packing, unpacking, getting stuck at work on at least 5 occasions and having to cancel my workout class, getting invited to an important networking event, etc. etc. Working out took the back burner and I do regret it.
Continue My Debt Snowball KIND OF
I switched to a no interest, no balance transfer fee credit card and in the transferring process I couldn’t make one of my snowball payments. So I put it in my savings account. Now I don’t want to take it out of there when the card is interest free, so it’s staying in savings. Hopefully, by having it in savings, I will avoid the need for a credit card if there’s a non-home-related emergency. As a result, I didn’t spend any of the snowball, but I also didn’t make a payment with it. I give this a “kind of.”
If May needed manageable goals because it was full of fun, June needs manageable goals because I’ll just be so dang busy! This month I start grading practice essays for students studying to take the bar exam. Also, because the weather will be warmer, I’ll have to spend some time working on my yard and, obviously, drinking on patios with friends. I’ll be limiting my focus to my most important goals.
Read 1 Book and Listen to 1 Audiobook – This goal will be present all year long. Here are the two I plan to start or at least finish in June:
Physical Book: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. I know that I won’t be able to finish this and then also start a new one, so this is the only physical book on the list, even though it’s a carry over.
Audiobook: I already used an audible credit to buy The Martian by Andy Weir. A lot of my friends really liked this book, and J actually read it cover to cover. He is not a big fan of reading. If it’s that good, I know I have to read it. I don’t listen to a lot of fiction audiobooks but this sounded like one that would be good for this medium. I’m excited to let you know what I think!
Participate In One Instagram Giveaway and One Blog Giveaway
This is another monthly goal. I have already registered for these giveaways! Wahoo! Spoiler alert: One will be coming your way on Instagram on June 2, and then keep an eye out for a blog giveaway on June 10! You won’t want to miss these prizes!
Host a periscope
Do you follow WMSB on Periscope?
I’m not giving up on myself yet. I am determined to periscope! If you have any requests on what you’d like to see me scope about, or what day of the week would be best, PLEASE leave it in the comments. Like, really, you could be the inspiration to help me stop being such a chicken!
Why: I have had a lot of goals in the past about writing x number of posts, or spend x number of minutes writing per day. These are great goals, however I have a ton of content on WMSB and spend very little time promoting it. This means that I write a post and then after a week or so, no one sees it. I’m hoping that by focusing on social media, alongside writing (which happens naturally because I love it), I will see greater success in this space.
Work Out Three Times a Week
I am LOVING this goal and do not want to give it up now just because I failed last month.

I wanted to work out every day in June while J is really busy at work, but with essays to grade and some company I have coming to town, I just know it’s not actually possible. I don’t want to set myself up to fail when I’ve been on a really good roll with this 3 days a week set-up, aside from the one week in May.
Continue My Debt Snowball
As soon as I get the first statement of my new credit card, I can go in and automate my payments. For now, I have one payment scheduled in the credit card’s website, but it won’t let me make any more than that in advance. Things like this are how credit card companies keep you from staying on track with your debt repayment!
If you’re in the process of paying off debt, I would strongly suggest auto-pay from within your bank account. My bank allows me to pay bills a quarter in advance. Taking the emotion out of my money has been key to paying off tens of thousands of dollars in debt over the last 16 months! When it comes out of my account automatically on the day my check clears, it’s like I never had the money in the first place! I love it.
Timely and thoroughly grade essays
This is one of my consistent “side hustles.” I used to use that money for a fun reward or bills. Now my “reward” is paying off debt! Last summer I used the check to pay off the first credit card I ever got! It was an amazing feeling. But by January of this year, I couldn’t handle how painfully slow my macbook was. It truly was holding me back from being able to grade consistently or blog easily. For that reason, I bought a new macbook and put it on a credit card. I took my check from the prep company and paid it off. So even though I made a pretty hefty credit card payment, it was an even-stevens trade and didn’t progress my snowball timeline. These essays will be a chunk on my debt repayment plan so I’m excited for that!
What are your goals for June? How did May go for you? Are you still on track for your resolutions? If not there’s nothing stopping you from figuring it out now, or setting new ones! I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
